We at Nanyang Optical, are without a shadow of a doubt, grateful for the constant support we have received. Having served the community for the past 60 years, we believe that it is important to return the favour, to show society our appreciation for the good run. Contributing to the community has always been one of our core pillars, and today is no different.

Since 2012, Nanyang Optical has been actively participating in the ‘Project We Care’, an initiative set up by the People’s Association (PA). ‘Project We Care’ promotes a sense of helpfulness through corporate giving and volunteerism by encouraging local business heads to motivate their workers to give back to the community meaningfully. Under this umbrella lies the SPECtacular Experience – an event which provides holistic eyecare services to residents. During this event, we provide end-to-end eye care solutions through free eye screenings, eyewear, eye health talks and even referral for eye treatments like cataract treatment.

Our Director, Mr. Bernard Yang states that whilst most grassroots volunteering events involve a level of engagement with healthcare groups on general health screenings, there was no specific focus on eye care. As such, he further states that he is inspired by the fact that many of Nanyang Optical’s eyewear competitors were actively engaging themselves in events such as SPECtacular, bonding together for a greater cause.

Due to the variety of eye-related issues, Mr Bernard Yang feels that the further outreach from local hospitals and the Singapore National Eye Centre has helped greatly in the fight against cataract problems, which are naturally very costly. As Singapore leans closer towards a silvering population, therein lies the problem of less privileged elderly being unable to afford eye tests and even proper spectacles. Hence, with the SPECTacular Experience, where free eye screenings and eyewear distributions, Mr Bernard Yang feels the quality of their lives are enhanced.

At the end of the day, we at Nanyang Optical will continue to give back to society, standing strong on our core pillar of helping the needy. Young or old, our mission is unwavering – to help the visually impaired in Singapore through appropriate eye care and positive experiences.
