Everyone knows that staying hydrated is very important for our overall health. However, do you know that staying hydrated is very important for your eyes as well?

At the basic level, f your eyes are not hydrated enough, it can cause problems like dry eyes and eye strain. The common symptoms of dry eyes include blurry vision, irritated eyes. These symptoms are caused by a decline in tear production due to the lack of moisture in your eyes. Tears – contrary to popular belief – are not there solely as a representation of grief or sadness. They are equally as important for keeping your eyes lubricated, which in turn provides clear vision. They also wash away debris like dust and dirt that enters your eyes daily.

Taking a dive deeper, lack of hydration – which leads to dry eyes – can also cause blurry vision as moisture is essential in helping light enter your eyes easily. Furthermore, dry eyes may even cause ulcers on your cornea, which is the clear layer of your eye that covers your iris. Also, if your eyes do not have enough amount of moisture it needed, they will have trouble doing simple tasks like blinking, causing them to be fatigued. This may not only cause a serious source of discomfort but may also lead to other general health complications in the long-term.

The best way to stay hydrated is to drink at least eight glasses of water every day regularly, not just when you feel thirsty. You should also cut down on the amount of caffeine and alcohol you put in your body. Even though eye drops can help in easing symptoms of dry eyes temporarily, the best permanent rehydrating solution is still regular consumption of water. You can also add foods with high percentages of water content in your diet like watermelon, strawberries, cucumber and lettuces.
